A SWEDISH WONDER SINCE 1764

Falu Rödfärg

is not just a house paint, it is Swedish cultural history in a can. The history of red paint can be traced back to the 16th century and today it is as natural a choice for architect-designed villas and public buildings as it is for summer cottages and boathouses. Wood is alive and, unlike plastic and oil paints, Falu Rödfärg lives with its substrate. It allows the wood to breathe, which reduces the risk of rot, and it follows the wood’s natural movements in sun, rain, snow, heat and cold.

Falu Rödfärg contains pigments from the mineralization of the Falu mine. Copper-poor ore, which has weathered over centuries, forms “red mud”, which in addition to copper contains a rare composition of more than twenty-one different natural minerals such as iron ochre, silicic acid and zinc. The result is a paint with a beautiful matt surface with coarse silicic acid crystals that refract and reflect the rays of light. In warm evening light, Falu Rödfärg’s color becomes intense and shimmering.

The natural protective properties are one explanation for why Falu Rödfärg has become Sweden’s most beloved outdoor paint.

WHAT CAN I PAINT?

Falu Rödfärg is an outdoor paint for untreated and unplaned spruce wood and for repainting surfaces previously painted with Falu Rödfärg. New prefabricated houses can be painted with Falu Rödfärg Original provided that the facade is supplied without primer or is primed with slurry paint.

WHEN SHOULD I PAINT?

You will achieve the best results if you paint when it is “just right” warm and “just right” dry. Do not paint on a surface that is very hot in the sun (the paint dries too quickly with the risk of peeling) or on wet wood (the moisture content should be below 18%). The lowest daily temperature for painting is +5° C.

THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT
  1. Treat with anti-fouling agent before painting.
  2. Stir the paint well, use clean tools.

  3. Paint with a Falu red paint brush.

  4. New and untreated wood is primed once with Falu Rödfärg that has been diluted with 10–20% water.

  5. Wait at least a day before finishing with a coat of undiluted paint. Remember that the paint should be worked into the wood in thin layers, do not paint too thickly. If a previously mud-colored surface is painted, it is usually sufficient to brush away loose paint and dirt.

  6. Start with a wire brush and then brush the entire surface with a broom.

  7. When the facade is clean of dirt and dust, paint once with undiluted Falu Rödfärg. Falu Rödfärg is a living product and the color may vary slightly depending on different pigment firings. The paint buckets are marked with a batch number, the number can be found at the top of the bucket just under the lid. Change the batch at a corner of the house to avoid shade differences.
